Why Splice

The Big Data Imperative

Companies are experiencing an explosion of data generated by applications, websites and users. With a proliferation of devices, such as smartphones and RFID tags, data growth only continues to accelerate.

Fueled by studies from consultants like McKinsey1, Big Data is now a hot topic in many boardrooms. Companies recognize that insights contained within Big Data can be a source of real competitive advantage, compelling them to act quickly and be the first to tap into this wealth of information.

Traditional Databases Overwhelmed

The exponential growth of data has overwhelmed traditional Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs), leaving companies that use RDBMSs with difficult choices regarding Big Data. They can use very expensive, specialized hardware to scale vertically on a few large servers, or they can start to use caching, clustering – and eventually – manual sharding.

While it offers the greatest ability to scale, sharding often requires a partial rewrite of applications and becomes an ongoing shard rebalancing nightmare. Even with manual sharding, traditional RDBMSs “hit a wall” beyond which it is impractical, if not impossible, to scale.

NoSQL Alternatives Available at Great Cost

NoSQL (Not Only SQL) databases, including HBase, MongoDB and Cassandra, have emerged as highly scalable alternatives for RDBMSs by leveraging auto-sharding. However, that scalability has come at a great cost.

NoSQL databases often have very limited SQL support, no secondary indexes, little or no support for joins, and no transactional integrity. These limitations make it more difficult for existing SQL-based developers to use the NoSQL databases and forces partial rewrites of applications to add additional join and transaction logic.

The Splice SQL Engine™:
The Advantages of SQL, the Performance of NoSQL

Built on the proven Hadoop stack, the Splice SQL Engine™ takes the best of both SQL and NoSQL database solutions to deliver a massively scalable database that provides robust SQL support, secondary indexes, join optimizations and transactional integrity.

With its broad SQL support and efficient optimizations, the Splice SQL Engine unlocks Big Data for the masses. It enables application developers to build hyper-personalized web, mobile and social applications that truly scale, while leveraging the ubiquity of SQL tools and skill sets in the marketplace. The Splice SQL Engine also scales to handle business intelligence and analysis, and works turnkey with tools like MicroStrategy® and Tableau®.
